Internal Locus of Evaluation
A concept within Person-Centered Counseling, in which a goal of therapy is to help a client develop an individualistic set of values, from which they make their own decisions. Thus, the evaluation of any decision-making is done by consulting one’s own values, rather than relying on the opinions of others in making personal choices.
Aversion Therapy
A type of behavioral therapy in which an aversive stimulus is applied when undesirable behaviour occurs, in an attempt to eliminate the undesirable behavior. Aversion Therapy can be applied in actual situations, or in simulated situations.
Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity
A condition affecting children that is characterized by an inability of a child to sit still, socially disruptive behavior and a short attention span.
Borderline Personality Disorder
A disorder in which a person exhibits difficulty in interpersonal relationships, impulsive actions, limited control of one’s emotions, sustained feelings of emptiness or boredom and issues with one’s self-image.
Bipolar Disorders
Mood disorders characterized by cycles of major depressive episodes and subsequent manic episodes.
Covert Sensitization
Inducing anxiety by getting a client to imagine unnerving and frightening situations and then providing relief for subsequent fear and anxiety through imagining relaxing situations. The objective of this exercise is to replace undesirable emotions and behavior with more desirable affect and actions.
Antisocial Personality Disorder
Characterized by irresponsible and chronic antisocial behavior, with seemingly little awareness of the moral implications of one’s actions. This disorder was formerly referred to as sociopathic personality or psychopathic personality.
